Leather Footwear Using a damp cloth, wipe off stable yard acids and mud at the end of the day. Horse urine is an acid and if left on the leather, will damage it. Remove any mud from the zips to keep them running smoothly. Boots should be kept at room temperature. If they get very wet, stuff them with absorbent paper while they dry out – don’t put them near a radiator as that will dry the natural oils out of the leather and can cause cracking! Treat the leather with conditioner to keep it soft and supple. You should do this monthly or as often as you clean your tack. Apply it to the leather when it is clean and dry (use a soft cloth, apply sparingly, buffing to a shine if appropriate, or follow manufacturer’s instructions). This will help to replace the natural oils. Never use strong chemicals like glycerin soap, since they may damage the leather permanently. Use shoe polish if desired or if you need to restore the colour. Leathers such as suede, nubuck, and distressed leathers should not be polished. Use a soft brush to clean the zipper and the seam around the outsole
